In Visiblis V, shown at Vaasa City Art Gallery, is the fifth instalment of Alexander Salvesen’s series of works of the same title.
In Visiblis is a multidisciplinary series of exhibitions that combines neon light, drawing, painting, sculpture and video. The works build upon different types of lines. They contemplate our complex relationship to the visible and invisible world we live in through light, reflections and afterimages.
The basis of Salvesen’s work is a black line on white paper, the resulting line drawings and binary bar codes. The vertical and horizontal lines bear traces of time and the artist’s movement on the paper. The delineation of surface and space is sometimes even violent. The black and white bar codes also carry the meaning of a computer language developed to bolster market capitalism while being illegible to humans. The binary also touches upon discussions about humanity, forests, the development of artificial intelligence and our relationship to the boiling world. The video piece In Transit, made in collaboration with the composer and audio artist Walter Sallinen, is also shown as a part of the exhibition.

Alexander Salvesen is a Swedish speaking multidisciplinary artist and curator who lives in Helsinki. His work is based on colors, shapes, spaces, and their relationship to each other and the viewer. They often spring from nature and natural phenomena, as well as the geopolitical atmosphere that surrounds us. In recent years, Salvesen’s production has taken a strong stance on the ongoing climate catastrophe, the collapse of biodiversity and the changes in our habitat. His work has been exhibited in museums, galleries and events in Finland and abroad.
